Old Timey Photos

Here are two of my images from the book store.
I have a couple more that I like, but haven't been able to edit everything from my shoot fully,
I'd like to take some more time to edit these and maybe some other ones, so that I can decide on the truly best ones from the shoot... but here's a "sneak peak", nonetheless.

Old Timey Photos

Hello,

I'm trying to get the Old Timey pictures up as soon as possible! I'm trying to get them up by 5.

Child Project

Child Photography

(more of a street photography approach)

At St. Joseph's Oratory
Kids looking at the view

In St. Joseph's Oratory
I know that this isn't a picture of a child, but it's quite obvious a child wrote this...I just thought it fit well with the one above it...

Cote-des-Neiges
Street Photography

I like this crop, because it shows the context more, but

this crop gets right in and close up to the child, yet it makes the lady on the left seem like part of the family, even though she isn't.
I just thought I'd include both either way...

Flash Research

I really like this picture, because the flash not only freezes the motion, but it lights up the subject enough that he is separated from the background.
(It's also interesting to read how the photographer makes his flash set up work...)

quote from photographer on how they lit the scene:
"I just used one remote 580ex ll at 1/2 to 1/1 power to compensate with the sun. I had to photograph at the peak of the afternoon to have maximum light from the sun."

I think the flash does help so that there aren't any unwanted and harsh shadows on her face, especially since it was shot when the sun is at its peak.

Catchlight Research

shot by islandcode on flickr

In this portrait i really think the model's eyes stand out, not only because of the colour, but also because of the catchlights. They're really close to her pupil, which makes it somewhat mysterious, adding to the mystery and intriguing quality of her blue eyes in contrast with her tan skin tone.

shot by mauronascimento

Once again the eyes really stand out in this picture, even though in this picture there isn't much contrast between the eyes, skin and hair. The catchlights aren't traditional; they're strange and squiggly which definitely adds interest an attracts our eyes towards the subject's. I think the photographer achieved his purpose by making interesting catchlights to attract the viewer's attention.

This low-key image would really fall apart I think, if there weren't any light areas, here the eyes and the catch lights, for eyes to latch on to.

FRUIT PROJECT

Here is my final fruit shot:

This shot was originally two shots of the same apple (two different sides), and I was just experimenting with overlaying them in Photoshop and making a new shape.

Food Photography Research - Creative

Milkman by Tamerlan

Tamerlan has a whole series of splashing beverages -coffee, tea, milk -, which I thought was really interesting, and I really like the look/tonal qualities this image has. Very retro-like. :)

I think these all count as "mouthwatering" :)

Glass Research

Here are a couple examples of some Glass pictures I liked:

I like this picture, mainly because of the idea. The set-up seems interesting and somewhat difficult to pull off and the photographer did a pretty good job with it.
If I would have to guess the type of set-up he used, I would think it's something similar to what we did with two skinny light on the side, to make the edges defined with light and reflection.
And then the light we see "inside the glass" would be some small light that someonoe would move around, creating swirls...

Luckily, under the picture was a short explanation on how it was done:

"A completely different lighting setup, with a sing light underlighting the glass. Most of the light exposure comes from the other light, which you can see in the photograph.
The key is that the glass is lit from underneith with a strobe, on a MINIMAL power. The light was swang behind the glass, so as not to flair up inside the glass (Tried both). To get the swing in the glass took erm... a few attempts."

I really like this picture, because it has very bold colours, and the reflections in the glass are really great. I also like how the photographer decided that the 'liquid" in the glass would be slanted, giving the picture another strong geometrical line, which also complements the two colourful diagonal lines going in the opposite direction.

As for the set up, I think that since this picture has dark edges, maybe there's some kind of black card in the side, which can then be reflected in the glass, or a set up is used where the background is lit, defining the dark edges in the glass, similar as seen in this video, also allowing the colours to be reflected.

This picture ("Glass") was shot by mprudlak on Deviantart.

STUDIO W2011: Egg Project

A simple set up:

The next set up was actually done by Tristan and Hilary and I was able to find a couple of interesting shots in the after math of their explosive eggs.

I also thought it would be fun to make a GIF out of two images, just when the egg is falling and breaking.

(This is at 0.3 seconds, I had one at 0.2, but I prefer the slower one, as it gives the break a bit more emphasis.)
