Magnum Photographers

I chose Josef Koudelka, born in a Czechoslovakian province,  as my photographer from the Magnum website.
His Portfolio

And here are a couple of his images that I liked:

In this image, he's controlling the background and waiting for the right moment, when the dog aligns itself with the path.

Here again, he aligns his subject with the background and quite possibly this is a candid shot.

This picture was take at just the right moment; he must've waited quite a long time for the birds to take flight and frame them in an interesting way. I also like how it seems the birds will continue to fly through the picture; there seems to be some kind of interaction between all the birds.

I know this image was taken on a day of a carnival, maybe only for school children. This is definitely a candid shot, and a very interesting one at that, since something like this doesn't occur everyday. I also like the interaction between the older woman and the angel-boy; she seems to be looking at him in an unapproved way, which seems somewhat ironic, because he's dressed up as an angel. There is also a slight implied interaction between the horses and the child; they're both going in the same direction, which doesn't make it feel like the horses are disturbing the composition of this picture.

Abstraction

Here are a couple of my abstract shots:

I like the shadows in this image, because they're also diagonal lines and kind of triangular.
Then there are diagonal lines and triangles in the carpet.

This is a close-up of a spider web; the threads are kind of delicate, so they don't show the great shapes I was hoping for, but they sort of contrast the circles in the blurry background.

Here's a close up of some wires; they show curved lines through out the image.

Assignment 1 Landscapes

Here is my final landscape shot:

This picture was taken on a stormy evening, the 5th of September, of Lac-St-Louis.

Here are a couple more shots that I took, while doing this landscape assignment, but didn't feel they were as "landscapey" as the shot above, yet I feel like they're still interesting.

Urban Landscape Research

This time our blog post is supposed to be about the emotions urban landscapes give us.
Here I'll show two different pictures from deviantart.com, both of the same city, Manila, but in different viewpoints, one being negative and one being positive.

POSITIVE URBAN LANDSCAPE - Manila waters by lennyconil
I really liked the beautiful colours in this shot and the use of reflections.
It really gives a sense of a clean, healthy place where one would want to live.

NEGATIVE URBAN LANDSCAPE - Poverty by go1985
The artist says she photographed this picture for a project titled "Something Ugly"; she felt like she didn't want to shoot poor people, but rather the situation they are in.
I feel like this picture portrays that idea really well; she is primarily shooting the surroundings and buildings, rather than the people in it.
The black and white definitely adds to the negative feeling we feel when we see this picture, but nonetheless I think it's a great shot and I really like the alignment and journalistic feel to this image.

In general I feel like these two pictures show that there are always two sides to a story, and in the case of urban landscapes it's often riches and poverty.

Westmount Landscapes

A couple of days ago, the 31st of August, we went to Westmount Park to start our "Landscapes Assignment".
Here are my shots:

This is similar to one of the photographs Martin Coles took and showed us in his presentation.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as "landscape", since the seagull is the subject of the picture, but I liked the reflection of the tree in the water.

I liked the shape of this tree :)
Luckily there was a couple sitting on the bench to make this shot more interesting, at least I think so.
(Colour-balance was slightly edited, since I thought it was too yellow; +15 blue.)

Framing

For our first blog entry about others' pictures, I decided I'd find my pictures on www.deviantart.com, since there are many talented people on this site, yet they're not well-known.

RULE OF THIRDS - dawn by mk-w
Not only is the girl near the imaginary left-line, but her foot, where I feel like my eyes move to, is at the cross-section of the right line and the bottom line.
Overall, I really liked the colours and the 'retro-feel' this picture gives, and that the water is frozen in time.

TIGHT FRAMING - Deep by mildhand
I liked the intensity of her stare; it feels like she's looking through you, and the black and white adds to the mysteriousness of the picture.

CREATIVE FRAMING - Asymmetry by Friandise
I really liked the colours and details of this picture, yet the creative framing makes it more interesting to look at, compared to a regular flower shot.

SENSE OF PLACE - Sunset at wild horses lake 7 by Yupa
This picture is so beautiful; the colours, the landscape and then the little details of the horses. These deatails and the feeling of tranquility really makes you feel like you're at the scene.
